Welcome to the Internet! The Internet is a wonderful source of information about our world. You may have already discovered many fun and amazing places to visit on the Web. You may have used the Internet for homework assignments, to find out about your favorite pet, or just for fun. You may also have heard that the Internet can be a dangerous place for kids to visit. Most of the sites on the Internet are safe, but some of the sites and people on the Internet might be dangerous for children. Many of these sites are for adults only and should not be visited by kids. And you should treat strangers on the Internet with as much caution as you would in the real world. Our handout will help you to learn to use the Internet safely. Please read our safety tips and visit the list of web sites to learn more about kid safety on the Internet.

All of the public access computers in the Children's areas of our libraries are filtered, which means that the Library uses a software program to block adult sites on the Internet as well as other Internet sites that fall into categories not allowed by our Internet Access Policy. Filters are not perfect, and sometimes a place on the Internet that should be blocked will appear on the computer screen. You should follow the same safety rules as you would on any computer, just in case the filter does not work. Library staff members will help you to use the computers and answer any of your questions about the Internet.
