One Book One Community - Spring Series

This spring, we invite the community to read Dashiell Hammett’s classic detective novel, The Maltese Falcon, first published in 1930! Along with Sam Spade, Hammett is credited with creating the ultimate private investigator.

Events correlating with One Book One Community include a visit with author Julie Smith, a discussion on the detective novel with Dr. Carl Freedman of LSU, film screenings of the classic movie starring Humphrey Bogart and other noir classics, public book discussions, and programs featuring gems, raptors and even a game of live Clue!

Watch Classic Noir Films
Join us at the Main Library for three thrilling noir film classics! Dr. Valerie Holliday, Chair of Speech, Foreign Languages, Fine Arts, and Entertainment at BRCC, will lead this series at 7:00 p.m. at each showing. The films shown will be:
The Maltese Falcon
When: April 7, Thursday - 7 PM
Join ace private investigator Sam Spade as he proves he’s no sap when it comes to negotiating a mystery thick with dangerous dames, goons, con-men, coppers, and the murder stained statue of a bird. Will Spade get his man or the wrong end of a gun?
Mildred Pierce
When: April 14, Thursday - 7 PM
Mildred Pierce is a woman determined and driven to improve her status in life as she tries to satisfy the demands of a spoiled daughter. Will divorce, family tragedy, and business turmoil stop her cold in her tracks? Or has she already gone too far?
Double Indemnity
When: April 21, Thursday - 7 PM
A smooth talking insurance salesman gets more than he bargains for when he encounters the mysterious Phyllis, who turns his policy into a proposition hard to refuse. As an investigator starts to untangle a web of lies and betrayal, can murder be too far behind? Or was it just an accident?

Get a Clue!

Where: The River Center Branch Library
Calling all detectives! Do you have the super sleuthing skills of the famous Maltese Falcon detective, Sam Spade? Children ages 8-11 are invited to the River Center Branch for a fun-filled game of Clue on Saturday, April 2, at 2:00 p.m. Be sure to check out some of our mystery books on display!

We’re closing out our blues series with two giants of the Baton Rouge blues scene! Lil’ Ray Neal and James Johnson. Lil’ Ray is a member of the internationally-known Neal family and one of the best contemporary blues musicians in Baton Rouge. James Johnson, a blues legend himself, played guitar with the world-famous Baton Rouge Bluesman, Slim Harpo. Both Lil’ Ray and James are amazing players, so we’re sure our last show will be a true blues blowout! Live @ Chelsea’s is a FREE monthly blues concert featuring local talent. Previous performances have included The Jazz Vipers, Louis Ford, John Smart, Betsy Braud, and The Baton Rouge Jazz Ensemble.

Louisiana Raptors – Birds of Prey
When: April 20, Wednesday - 4 PM
Where: The Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library
Children ages 7 and up are invited to listen to Michael Seymour, an ornithologist who is a Scientific Collecting Permits Coordinator for Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Seymour will present a program at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch about Louisiana’s Birds of Prey. Learn about these majestic birds which inhabit Louisiana on Wednesday, April 20, at 4:00 p.m.

Birds of Prey
When: April 27, Wednesday - 10:30 AM
Where: The Main Library
Dr. Javier Nevarez, from the LSU Raptor Rehabilitation Center, will present Birds of Prey to children ages 4 and up at the Main Library. Children will observe an exciting presentation and learn more about these large and powerful hawks and owls on Wednesday, April 27, at 10:30 a.m.
